Basically, it's a guitar with a semi hollow body, but why?

First, a little information is in order on a few other different guitar types:

A semi-acoustic, or hollow body electric is a different type of electric guitar. Rather than just a single pickup or soundbox, a Hollow Body guitar can have both. Unlike an acoustic electric guitar, the Hollow Body is not merely an acoustic guitar with electric pickups for added amplification. The Purpose of the soundbox of the Semi-Acoustic Guitar is to give it tonal qualities that cannot be achieved from a solid construction guitar. In much the same way, the Semi Hollow Body Archtop Guitar is also constructed in a way to give it a blend of different tonal qualities for various styles of music.  While a semi-acoustic may be intended for use as both an electric and acoustic guitar, they are almost never performed without an amplifier.
