Nostalgic for a Gibson ES-175?

Review on the Ephiphone ES-175 Reissue

Epiphone ES-175 For SaleThe Epiphone ES-175 is an Electric Archtop Guitar that’s generating all kinds of excitement among Jazz guitar players these days. What’s so exciting about the Epiphone ES-175? Well, for one thing it is a reissue of the vintage Gibson ES-175 Guitar from 1950. An original version of the Gibson ES-175 would cost upwards of $2,500 or more. Epiphone, the lower-tiered cousin of the popular Gibson Brand, re-issued the ES-175 just this past year. Epihpone’s idea was to make a great sounding Electric Acoustic Archtop Guitar that would fit just about anyone’s budget, and at the same time stir up some nostalgia of the incredible Gibson vintage model. Judging by the numerous user’s reviews, Ephipone’s re-launch of the ES-175 has been a stunning success.

Arcthop Guitar reviewers seem impressed with the nicely crafted Florentine single-cutaway bottom with access to 21 frets. The 24 and ¾” fretboard is made of rosewood with a maple neck, split parallelogram fret markers and 1.68” nut. The body of the ES-175 is made from beautiful laminated mahogany and the top is maple. I am not a guitar player, myself, but even I can appreciate its vintage-sunburst looks. For electronic controls, the ES-175 is equipped with two Chrome Alnico Humbuckers, two volume and two tone knobs which are controlled by a 3-way switch.

So, how does the Epiphone version of Gibson’s Vintage 1950 ES-175 Sound? The consensus opinion among players and owners of this instrument is that it is a great Archtop or Jazz Guitar for the money. Its sounds are described as surprisingly rich, warm and surpass what one would expect from a $500 Jazz Guitar.

How does the Ephiphone ES-175 compare to the real thing?

I did some research online of the opinions of players who own the original Gibson models of the 50’s. While I have yet to find one who says the Epiphone plays as well as their original 1950 Gibson ES-175, not one of them expressed any disappointmentin it either. If you’re an aspiring Jazz Guitar player on a budget, or simply one who wants to add an Archtop to your collection of guitars, the ES-175 is perfect for you.
